Who teaches the workshops?
All the classes are taught by me - Penny Akester - a qualified adult education teacher and experienced jeweller. See the About Me page for more about me.
Where are the workshops held?
The Individual and small group workshops are all held at my home in Camden, London - the nearest tube station is Mornington Crescent, which is on the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line. I am also in easy walking distance from Kings Cross, St Pancras, Euston, Camden Town, Camden Road and Euston Square stations and bus routes C2, 24, 27, 29, 31, 46, 88, 134, 168, 214, 253 & 274.
Larger groups and parties are either held at your own venue or at a venue that I will arrange in Camden or central London and will be confirmed with you during booking.
A directions sheet and full address details are provided with all booking confirmations.
What do you teach?
I teach a variety of different jewellery making skills including different ways of stringing beads, making simple wire rings or earrings, pearl knotting, using memory wire and elastic, making Shamballa bracelets, various types of knotted, braided and plaited jewellery, Kumihimo (Japanese Braiding) as well as stitiched beadwork and working with silver clay. For mre information about the different possibilities available have a look at this page
What is included in the price?
The workshop fees include everything needed to completely finish your jewellery; the beads and other materials, use of relevant tools, instruction sheets to take away, gift bags for your finished pieces and refreshments during the session. There are no additional costs.
Where can I get beads and tools?
I am not a bead or supplies shop, but I do usually have small selection of tools and materials that may be available to buy from me on the day of your class should you wish to get started making more jewellery immediately. I provide all students with information about local suppliers for beads, tools and a variety of other information sources that may be useful.

When should I book?
For the best choice of available dates, you should book early as I may otherwise get booked up, but I am happy to take last minute bookings up to just 2 days before your chosen date, if i have no prior bookings.
Ideally at least one week's notice is required to ensure that I have the tools and materials all available and ready for you to use. For parties I need at least a full month's notice to be able to arrange venue hire.
Bookings are taken on a first come first served basis and are not confirmed and dates held until payment has been received.
Do I need to pay all at once?
You can of course pay for your booking in full when you arrange your date and this is simplest, but this doesn't suit everyone so you can also choose to pay a deposit and then pay the balance later on.
If you aren't ready to pay all at once, to secure your booking so that I can keep the date free and buy the materials ready for you to use, as well as to arrange venue hire if needed, you need to pay a non refundable deposit of £100 (£50 for individual tution). The remaining balance must be paid at least one week before the start of the course.
Deposits are not refundable.
I cannot offer credit - except for business or community group bookings where I will invoice the organisation on the day of the event.
I do offer gift vouchers if you'd like to treat a friend.
How do I book?
Contact me to discuss possible dates and what you would like to learn, then i will send you a PayPal invoice. You can also book online and pay by credit or debit card, please click here to visit the booking page. Select your chosen option and click the pay now button. If you prefer not to pay online, please contact me to pay by cheque.
How many students do you have?
This depends on the type of course you are interested in.
I offer a choice of either;
- Individual tuition (just you)
- Small groups (up to 4 students)
- Parties (up to a maximum of 15 students)
Can I cancel or change my mind?
For most tuition, you can re-schedule your booking up to one week before the arranged date, subject to my availability.
Refunds are not possible.
If a room has already been hired for a party, changing the date will usually incur an additional charge depending on the venues policies.
What time do the workshops start?
Most of my workshops are full days and run from 10am to 5pm. Shorter workshops and parties run at different times which are arranged to suit you. Workshop times are detailed in full on all booking confirmations and can be tailored to your needs.
What do I need to bring?
If you wear glasses for close work, do please bring these. You don't need to bring anything else however - all tools and materials are provided, as well as refreshments. If you have a favourite tool, or one that you would like to know how to use, you are welcome to bring this. If you are coming for a full day, you are welcome to bring a packed lunch.
Can my friend come too?
If you have booked individual tuition, or for a group of 2 or 3 of you, this can be changed easily to include your friend/s as well, up to a maximum of 4 people.
It costs less per person to bring a friend, and can make a fun day out!
If you have booked a party or larger event, you can make changes to the final number of attendees up to one week before the event. The absolute maximum is 15 people to ensure that everyone gets the attention they need.
What if a course is cancelled?
In the very unlikely case that a course needs to be cancelled you will be notified at least 7 days in advance (unless in emergency circumstances - if I am suddenly too ill to work) and offered either a full refund or an alternative date.
Are your classes suitable for children and young people?
For my individual and small group workshops I do not accept students under the age of 16.
I am however available to teach at schools, after school clubs, community, children’s' and family learning centres, or to come to you to hold a jewellery making party for children aged 7 - 15.
Do you teach any other subjects or classes?
If you have anything in particular you would like to learn that is not covered by my normal range, do get in touch. I am happy to provide individual tuition with projects of your choice for anything within my own range of skills.
If I don't teach what you would like to learn I would be happy to recommend a number of other training centres, jewellery schools and other resources that should be able to help you.
